Technology & Markets

Material science is the foundation of Bemis Company's competitive advantage.  The flexible packaging business segment has a strong technical base in polymer chemistry, film extrusion, coating and laminating, printing, and converting.  Bemis operates under a decentralized business model with business units organized around core technologies or specific markets.  Pressure sensitive materials applications include label products, graphics and technical products.  The largest market for the company's products is the food industry, which accounts for approximately 70 percent of sales. Other markets include medical device, chemicals, personal care, agribusiness, pharmaceuticals, printing and graphic arts, and a variety of other industrial end uses.  Bemis holds the leadership position in most markets it serves, and its world class customer list includes such global food and consumer products companies as Kimberly-Clark, General Mills, Kraft, Hershey, Procter and Gamble, Nestle, Frito-Lay, Johnson & Johnson, and Medtronic.



To serve as the lead technical resource within an assigned business segment of Bemis Performance Packaging; act as a technical liaison within BPP, our customers and our suppliers; establish, maintain and coordinate projects related to the development, evaluation and commercial application of BPP technologies; and assign projects and manage technical resources responsible for conducting daily development and commercial support activities. Works with all BPP plants and personnel throughout the division as well as direct involvement with suppliers, sales and marketing representatives and customers related to technology development, evaluation and commercial application.



Specific Responsibilities:

  • Acts as a safety leader and puts safety first in all responsibilities.
  • Works with the commercial leadership in the business segment to identify and prioritize key platform development and critical customer project activity
  • Utilizes the Bemis Commercialization System to ensure consistent, timely and effective portfolio management within the business segment
  • Responsible for collecting, assessing and characterizing the active, available and leading commercial technologies within the business segment
  • Develops and maintains relationships with lead technical resources for key customers within the segment to build continuity and intimacy of the customer, their products and their opportunities
  • Responsible for the development of new products and modifications to existing product lines
  • Actively participates in instilling the WCOM culture in the BPP organization, including leading and participating on WCOM teams.
  • Assists in reporting and evaluating supplier partnerships on an ongoing basis
  • Represents Bemis/BPP at industry conferences and trade shows.
  • Reviews, prioritizes, assigns and leads development projects for existing and new technologies within the business segment
  • Oversees financial tracking and reporting for costs associated with development and commercialization of new products
  • Owns film detail (composition, pricing, key price levers, etc.) for new and/or developmental specifications
  • Responsible for managing the development and proliferation of the product portfolio within the business segment
  • Trains others as needed to transfer key product criteria knowledge as required
  • Works with technical and operational functions to identify, prioritize and implement VA/VE opportunities in existing films/customer applications
  • Acts as gatekeeper between customers and internal technical community
  • Works with BPP operational and commercial functions to coordinate, conduct and document development and customer trials
  • Works with Supply Chain/Procurement to remain current on resin pricing/levels/availability in order to ensure optimal film distribution
  • Reviews and analyzes KPI's and reports to Divisional Leadership on a routine basis to support growth initiatives within flexible packaging films.




  • A bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Packaging Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Materials Science or a closely related field; Advanced degree preferred
  • 7 or more years of experience in a technical function related to the development, production/commercial use of flexible packaging, or work with other products utilizing polymer material sciences. (If you have a higher level of education, and can demonstrate top end potential, less experience could be considered)
  • Documented experience working directly with customers
  • WCOM Foundations or Six Sigma certification or a willingness to obtain such education upon accepting this role.
  • Completion of Finance for Non-Financial Professionals coursework and/or any Bemis Business Acumen Curriculum or a willingness to complete such coursework upon acceptance of this role


Essential Physical Requirements

Work is conducted almost entirely in an office environment.  Travel (sometimes overnight or for an extended period) to other sites and supplier facilities may be required.
